Switch back to tab you were on when closing another; not to the tab left of the one you closed.
Remember the tabs that you were on previously. So when you switch to a tab, just to check and close it, you want to return to the previous tab you were working on.

Because I work with very large data sets and tab switching is an expensive process, I don't want it to first open the tab to the left. Which in this case had a huge aggregation. The collection has more than 1200 fields, arrays and objects on the root level, so opening that tab takes 20 seconds where the IDE is unresponsive. My PC spec are excellent. Xeon processors, 2 quad cores, 16 GB Ram.
How about using some GPU here as well?
